The Summer Village day use area was documented as a popular spot for bird watching. September, when the assessment was completed, is a time when migratory birds are heading south for the winter and many bird observations of feeding and resting birds were documented within the day use area. Observations included the following species: • American robins • Downy woodpecker • Blue jays • Black-billed Magpie • Yellow warbler • Yellow-rumped warbler • Bohemian waxwings • American crows

The name ‘Ma-Me-O’ is derived from the Cree words for “place of many shore birds”, owing to the beach’s past popularity as a migratory stop for Passenger Pigeons as well.
