Best practices to prevent spills when refueling a boat

Thank you to the residents at Pigeon Lake who provided boat refueling tips. According to boaters, spills can happen for a number of reasons e.g. handling mishaps, loose caps, missing the gasket, old equipment, overfilling, awkward boat position, etc.

Tips for preventing spills while refueling at personal docks:

- Ensure cap is sealed prior to transport

- Use a manageable sized jerry can

- Know the size of your fuel tank

- Position the boat close to the dock. Don't reach to pour

- Place a drop cloth under the jerry can

- Use a fuel transfer pump*

- Watch the fuel level as you fill (some suggest filling only 3/4 full)

- Replace aging equipment

What attachments for a jerry can help prevent gasoline spills?

- Auto stop sensor to prevent overfilling

- Different sized caps to fit different sized cans

- Drain back, gas will empty back into jerry can

PLWA has been in conversation with local gas stations and stores about stocking these types of refueling attachments. Residents also found fuel transfer pumps online and at larger home improvement stores.

Special thanks to the Summer Village of Poplar Bay for providing financial support for the boat refueling stewardship initiative.
