2012-03-01 - Removal of Ma-Me-O Beach Pier

The well-known Ma-Me-O Beach Pier was observed to be removed in 2012. This process began February 21, 2012 and went until March 13, 2012.

Build-up of algae, reeds and other lake fauna were observed and cited as the reason for the pier removal; to restore the natural flow along the Pigeon Lake shore. As the removal took place, creosote pilings/posts were revealed to be part of the original structure of the pier. Creosote has been well documented as a harmful substance to both humans and the environment.
