Calling All Gardeners
PLWA is offering free plants to property owners at Pigeon Lake. Our goal is to have 2021 plants planted in the watershed by November 2021. Are you up for the challenge?
A variety of native species that thrive in this region will be available to residents. The inventory of trees and shrubs is listed below. We haven’t forgotten about the understory — native ground cover, herbaceous perennials, wildflowers, grasses and sedges will also be available in the coming weeks. The inventory will be updated as more plants are purchased.
How can you participate?
1. Make a Difference & Make it Count: Join the Challenge -- Provide your plant request using the form below. Please let PLWA Staff know you are committed to planting in the watershed. In the subject line add: "I will join the challenge by planting in the Pigeon Lake Watershed!”
2.Select Your Plant(s): If you are interested in planting anything from the current inventory, please let us know as soon as possible. We will set them aside. Grasses and perennials will be added to the inventory in the coming weeks.
3.Arrange Pick up: Coordinate with PLWA Staff to pick your plants. You have the option of going directly to the nursery or meeting staff outside the PLWA office at the Village. Currently we are working with Sherwoods-Forests Nursery near Warburg.
4.Planting: PLWA will offer some instructional information to give the plants a great start. The rest is left to you.
5.Share your Story: Email us with a picture of the plants in the ground. Or, (optional) Post photos of the plantings on social media using #2021PlantingChallenge
Inventory
Please Note: A native flower and grass inventory will be posted soon.
Most of these plants will be available as seedlings but some will come as plugs. For growing characteristics and site preferences of the trees and shrubs, please check out: AWES Native Agroforestry Species Database
