What are the impacts of fireworks?
Fireworks are a fun tradition during many Canadian holidays, but they have negative impacts on the environment.
Fireworks emit smoke and metallic debris upon explosion that can contaminate the air and nearby water bodies.
They also often contain perchlorate. Perchlorate is a chemical that is commonly used in road flares, explosives, and rocket fuel. It can enter surface and ground waters and ultimately interfere with proper thyroid function in humans and other animals. It lasts a long time in the environment and is easily absorbed by plants.
Researchers have also found that fireworks are correlated to anxiety, disorientation, stress and fear in wildlife. The noise caused by the explosion can cause wildlife to become disoriented, decreasing their ability to locate their homes.
